Size And Habitat

The different hamster varieties do have a quite significant physical size range. Be sure to understand how big your hamster is expected to grow and have a hamster habitat that is suitable for your size hamster.

  • Syrian Hamster: 6-8 inches

  • Dwarf Campbells Russian Hamster: 4 inches

  • Dwarf Winter White Russian Hamster: 3.5-4 inches

  • Roborovski Hamster: about 2 inches

You will need to select a cage that is large enough, safe, and easy to clean.

Dwarf Hamster Behavior And Temperament

Dwarf hamsters comprise of many species, and each has some specific personality traits. For instance, the Russian hamster is a curious little creature that's notably easy to handle. The Roborovski hamster stays awake during the day more than other species. Overall, dwarf hamsters make for captivating and low-maintenance pets. They will learn to recognize you and come to the side of their enclosure if you're nearby (especially if you have FOOD!).

All hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they play and eat during the night and rest during the day.

Most dwarf hamsters take well to people holding them, but they will nip if they feel uncomfortable. Calm, gentle handling from a young age can help them to feel safe when held. It's best to sit on the ground in a secured space when holding your hamster, as these animals can move quite quickly and might break free of your hold if you're not paying attention. It's also important never to squeeze your hamster in your hands, as this can result in injury for the animal or cause it to bite you.

Syrian Hamster Behavior And Temperament

Syrian hamsters have a reputation for being friendly! These hamsters are one of the most solitary animals in the wild, making them equally as territorial. That means they should always be housed alone as pets.

Syrian hamsters sleep during the day and are active at night. They are generally quiet pets. As pets, Syrian hamsters don't necessarily form a close bond with their owners. But they often will come up to the side of their enclosure if you're there, and many will enjoy lounging in your hands. Expect to spend a few hours per week on feedings and maintaining your hamster's habitat.
